“WORKSHOP THEME”

Department of Sanskrit and Home Science of S.D. College proposes to organize National Workshop in the month of 27th, January, 2009 on “Counseling Techniques in Indian Psychological Tradition” “भारतीय मनोवैज्ञानिक परम्परा में काउंसलिंग तकनीक” in which 50 persons including resource persons shall participate belonging to different disciplines so as to rethink, re-evaluate and redefine the whole concept keeping in view the upcoming changes and challenges before the human mind in the modern age. The workshop proposes to redefine the essence of Indian Counseling techniques.
Counseling needs in the Indian context emerge against the background of tremendous social change. In addition, the last ten years of economic reform have enhanced the pace of these changes and further transformed life styles. Counseling services are poorly defined and presently anyone at all with little or no training can offer these services. Available counseling services are largely based on Western approaches to psychology. These approaches have been widely criticized as not being relevant to the Indian cultural context. A relevant and culturally valid counseling psychology therefore has remained a fledgling discipline. Psychological thought is not new to India, and ancient traditions present ideas and constructs that are rich in possibilities for application. This workshop will examine the Western and the traditional Indian approaches and proposes that these approaches could together inform the development of a psychology of counseling that is empirically sound and culturally relevant to the Indian context.

Objectives of the workshop are-

To develop an Indian approach to Counseling techniques relevant for today’s world

To evolve a vision of human nature and its possibilities according to Indian Psychology
To work out how this vision can contribute to the evolving global civilization
To develop applications of Indian Counseling techniques in the fields of health, psychotherapy, education, management, and social work
